TimeOut Barcelona: Josep Lambles
Sí, se alistó en la marina, y dice que nunca nadie ha hecho un retrato tan potente como el de Hal Ashby en 'El último deber'. "Sentí la llamada de la armada un día en el Prado, mirando cuadros de Goya -me cuenta-. Lo vi muy claro: si quería ser pintor tenía que estar en contacto con las fuerzas naturales, y me hice a la mar". No mitifiquemos, aguantó poco el aspecto de Jack Nicholson tatuado, con gorrito blanco y faria en los labios. Ahora vive en Nueva York. Le llamo, y desde que descuelga el teléfono oigo las sirenas de las ambulancias y los golpes de claxon. Pero no ha perdido su fascinación por la naturaleza. "Ahora pinto erizos".Dennis Hollingsworth descubrió el sentido de la vida un día que su padre fue a la escuela y le hizo salir de clase. "Me asusté mucho -explica-. Mientras íbamos hacia el coche mi padre no hablaba. Yo pensé que había pasado algo, que alguien había muerto". El susto se le acabó cuando vio que el maletero estaba lleno de cañas, redes y un saco de gusanos. Fue una campana autorizada para ir a pescar. "Mi padre era así: un hombre espontáneo -continúa-. Y eso no es lo peor. De vez en cuando llegaba a casa y nos decía que hiciéramos las maletas, porque cambiábamos de ciudad. Pasé mi infancia en trece o catorce lugares diferentes ".
Pero éste no era el sentido de la vida. Las salidas irreflexivas de su padre el enervaban más que ninguna otra cosa. "Ahora bien, me inculcó un gran amor por el campo, la montaña y el río -afirma-. Gracias a eso comencé mi revolución artística". Una revolución? Los años 70 habían puesto de moda un arte conceptual, político, social, ideológico y, en definitiva, poco material. "Fue muy necesario, no digo que no, pero cuando llegué yo ya tocaba cambiar un poco de moldes, y volver a sentir con qué está hecha una obra de arte", proclama. Id a ver 'Terrestrial' a la galería Miguel Marcos y lo entenderéis todo.
Bueno, todo quizás no. ¿Qué es eso de los erizos? "Yo les llamo mónadas, por 'La Monadología' de Leibniz -explica-. Son pequeñas bolas de pintura con pinchitos que pongo a casi todos mis cuadros". Se ve que la primera apareció, medio por casualidad, hacia 1995, mientras Hollingsworth experimentaba con un amasijo de aceite espesado. Se dio cuenta de que esta esfera con púas modificaba la energía del lienzo, transformaba el movimiento de la pintura y le daba una nueva aura. "Claro que esto es sólo una teoría mía -matiza, con un punto de modestia-. Seguro que mucha gente no estará de acuerdo".
Me parece que cuando era navegante miró demasiado tiempo las estrellas. Ahora todo le parece dotado de poderes cósmicos, incluso un miserable erizo hecho de pintura. "Es la idea de 'Terrestrial': buscar la armonía entre el arte, el planeta y el universo", anuncia. Llamadme macabro, pero mientras le escucho hablar no puedo evitar recordar aquellos puercoespines de Schopenhauer que para darse calor en un día de helada se engancharon unos a otros, sin pensar que tenían el cuerpo cubierto de un arma homicida. Espero que el buen rollo que tienen sus mónadas no acabe en un trágico exceso de amor.

Pardon my blogging lacunae. It's been complex, this move to NYC. My wife and I are finally planting ourselves into the city, more about that to come. Along the way, I'm also wrangling with server issues at the moment which have snarled my blogging set up to a standstill.

Doug Henders: Background Checks
As a winter storm bears down across the midwest towards the east coast (perhaps the last one this season?), the Armory Fair and the Independent Art Fair have programmed events for the week in NYC. In the midst of these storms, my friend Doug Henders is opening a solo show at Mayson Gallery in the LES. Here is his press release:
Doug and I first met many years ago when he visited my studio in LA's Chinatown. I can count on one hand, the number of fellow artists who share a formative experience in the US military together, Doug is one of them. On top of this, I can count on one finger, the number of folks who have had a similar job in the service, his experience in the Army War Room is a parallel to my work in a warship Combat Information Center, that part of the ship just behind the bridge, a dark room lit by radars and edge lit plexiglass plot boards. This kind of job was a premonition of the information age to come, the marshaling of data into a mental picture modelled on anticipated situational reality. It was for me, and I think it was also for Doug, a peculiarly appropriate preschool for an art education and career to follow afterwards.

Artist Reception: Wednesday, March 6, 6-8pmMayson Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition of works by Doug Henders. In BACKGROUND CHECKS, Henders continues his exploration of filtering information through the process of painting; using maps, diagrams and images as a history of recorded events. This karmic audit examines the past 10 years of his exhibited works in the US, Europe and Middle East, extrapolating abstract forms and recurring themes into psychedelic feedback loops, alchemic landscapes and body scans.
Henders working process is grounded in his early career as a Cartographer in the US Army, stationed at European Headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany, where he presented strategic briefings in the War Room. It's also where he first saw the work of Polke, Richter, Kippenberger, painters who inspired him to later attend art school using the GI Bill. In the years since receiving his BFA in the 80's, Henders has endeavored to reconcile these conflicting cultures, by combining his military experience of mapping observation with the practice of painting.
